      <image:title>Blog - Grand Central Market - Los Angeles, Ca</image:title>
<image:caption>Our January 2019 trip was a bust due to the Women’s March taking place right by Chinatown so we’re going to try again. When we were planning the trip in January, I told my dad, and this is what he emailed me. I can’t wait to relay our visit to him, he’s in Washington state and will probably not return to the market. “ Your mention of a trip to L. A. to visit Grand Central reminded me of when I was a kid, 12 or 13 years old. My family never owned a car and my Uncle Hugo would come to the house every Saturday morning to pick-up my Dad and they both would go to Grand Central to do the weekly shopping. Since they went so frequently, they established relationships with vendors at particular stalls. There was a stall for produce, the bakery goods for bread, and of course the deli counter where they purchased Italian cold cuts. They shopping was usually done before noon so we had fresh bread and and lunch meats for sandwiches for lunch. On the occasion that my Uncle couldn't make it, my Dad and I took the bus downtown to do the shopping and I helped carry the bags home on the bus. Frequently, I accompanied my Dad and Uncle Hugo would bring Ronnie to keep me company. Ronnie an I would venture throughout the market just taking in the sounds and smells while our Dads did the routine shopping. Fond memories of those days. Hope you enjoyed your trip to the Market. Love, Pop”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Anthony Bourdain No Reservations, season 8, episode 8. It was because of this show that on a trip to Rosarito with girlfriends, we headed to Ensenada for tostadas. La Guerrerense was on a side street off Alvarado as a street cart and served a variety of seafood ceviche tostadas. I tried the clam and urchin that seemed to be the favorite and had a second one of scallop and fish. I need to say that I’m not a ceviche fan, but when Tony recommends it, I gotta try it. It was served on a crispy corn tostada, the seafood was varied and the assortment of toppings were fresh. There was a variety of house made salsas, mild, fruity, hot and unique, I have to say, if you’re a ceviche fan, they have a lot of combinations, but I’m not. The seafood tasted fresh, but raw is not my preferred method of preparation. The ceviche I’ve had and liked was ‘cooked’ in citrus juice, probably for hours, this seemed to be diced and had limon squeezed on it prior to serving and that left it a little too raw for me. So, I’m not a good judge of ceviche tosadas, but had to see what the hype was about, and it had unique combinations so at least it wasn’t boring.</image:caption>

We were lucky that there were no power outages, but if you have any medical need for continued electricity, you may be out of luck. We could hear and feel the hum even when we were blocks away from this site, but approaching it, it was clear what this place was. Kind of crazy that semi trucks with generators were powering a whole island.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tuk Tuk drivers are not your friend, they will take you to places you don’t want to go so you can be pressured to buy something from the people they get paid by to bring you there. The one good thing the tuk tuk driver did, was to take us to a great hole in the wall restaurant, but they are probably all great. We spent too much time at a high end custom tailor and a jeweler than I wanted to, and had a hard time expressing that we wanted to leave. No, let me rephrase that, he had a hard time understanding that we wanted to leave, we were not buying any custom suits or jewelry period.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Us</image:title>
<image:caption>My name is Susan and I’m a paralegal by day, wife, mom to older teenager sons, and 2 dogs. Pretty typical. Born in Japan to a Japanese mom and military father, I came to the US when I was just several months old. My mom really tried to cook “American” food to appease my dad and also to adapt to her new country but she, quite honestly, wasn’t a good cook at either American or Japanese food. Ketchup ground beef tacos. Yeah. Fortunately, my taste buds have matured as I’ve gotten older. For me, food isn’t about fancy surroundings or even sitting down at a table in some cases. It can be as simple as a $1 fish taco from a roadside stand on a side street in a beach town in Mexico while chugging a $1 cerveza, eating the freshest sushi and sashimi from 7-11s in Tokyo (honestly, Google it) or a bentobox aboard the bullet train in Japan. Sometimes if you go off the beaten path, you find the most interesting places and people and experiences. This is what life is about in my opinion. I’m passionate about travel Join me as we explore tasty food!</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Us</image:title>
<image:caption>I think I should clarify up front that Street Food Divas isn’t limited to Street Food or contributions from females. We focus on the opposite of fine dining. At the beginning I thought we would be chronicling trips to street food sites, but realized it would be more than that. I’ve been hosting themed dinner parties with friends for years, I have a lot of friends that love food and we like to plan, cook and eat together. I thought I’d share what we’ve done and some of the things we love in addition to trips we take for food and fun. Our trips are not sponsored, and are for the typical traveler, or should I say, NOT the luxury traveler. My goal is to have interaction with local people, eating local food, and share our experiences so you can either do as we did, or at least learn from our experiences. I grew up in a household where my father worked full time and my mother hated to cook, so I took a turn once a week cooking for the family. As a 5th grader I could break down a chicken in less than 5 minutes. In middle school I worked in the cafeteria and wanted to be the lunch lady when I grew up, and I’m glad to say my tastes have evolved some over the years. My thoughts revolve around cooking/eating and traveling, it’s the reason I work, so I can travel and experience other places and learn about them through food.</image:caption>
